Video game reviews: Splatterhouse 3 - Akron Video Games

Splatterhouse 3 is a game that was created for the Sega Genesis. Unlike its predecessor on the same console, this one has a bit of a different style in terms of gameplay. It was a solid beat 'em up game that was a pretty popular genre. It was used as far as games like Double Dragon, Final Fight, and the early Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games. It was a horror game that had been implemented with that style.

The story is the follow up to the last game. Rick and Jennifer had a son named David. Paranormal activity had struck the house again and it was up to Rick to don the mask and start taking care of the threats that had arrived. A begin that calls itself The Evil One has a desire to take over the world and in order to do so must terrorize Rick's wife and son. Rick has to save the day.

Graphically, the game was very solid in that department. While it isn't going to be the part that should be considered the true factor in whether the game is going to be good or not, you cannot help but give them credit. For the Sega Genesis and technology at the time, they did a solid job.

The gameplay is pretty much like a beat 'em up. There are difficulty modes. Once you have that selected and your controls as well. Once everything has been set up to your satisfaction, you can then begin playing immediately. Once you start, you're going to find that there is going to be a need to use a combo attack. This attack can be performed with the left and right arrows along with your attack command.

The other option is if you gain enough power you can become Mutant Rick. He is a bulkier version and stronger. His attacks are stronger and can grab enemies and either slam them or shake them. There is the option to slam them.

Another option that has to be noticed is the timer. It is critical to pay attention to it and take the quickest route possible. Try mapping it out completely with it paused. Once you've done that, you simply take the route and go forward. There is a boss battle and you should try to make quick work.

One significant piece of information is that this game does have multiple endings. It is all dependent on speed. The faster you complete the game, the more likely you are to receive the best ending. The best one is rescuing everyone. The next three involve tragedy so to speak. You can rescue either David or Jennifer but the other dies. The last one is the most tragic and involves being extremely slow in that it was designed that both die. Either way, the choice is yours and yours alone.

It's a fun game to play. To get this game, it can be bought with the Splatterhouse game for the Xbox 360 as it has that game alongside the Arcade version of the first one and also the second one, which was released for the Sega Genesis. For Splatterhouse fans and perhaps fans of horror games, this is one that should be looked at.
